Rural Health Care: Solar Powered

Solar energy plays a key role
in the fight to irradicate Polio and other childhood diseases.

Vaccine refrigeration, lighting, safe water supply, communications, and medical appliances are powered by solar electricity.

SőL provides technical assistance, training, program planning and evaluation to the World Health Organization in support of solar energy use at rural health care facilities in Latin America.

Solar- Powered Vaccine Refrigerator-Freezer

World Health Organization & PanAmerican Health Organization
The Cold Chain is a WHO/PAHO-assisted program which depends upon reliable refrigeration to conserve vaccines from point of manufacture to point of use. Solar electricity is used in unelectrified communities to maintain a safe supply of vaccines and to freeze icepacks for transport to the most remote populations.
