Who the Course is for
This is a practical, hands-on course for anyone who
wants to learn how to produce their own electric power from the sun.
No prior knowledge or experience is required. Applications will focus
on small scale systems for homes, cabins, rural clinics & schools,
agriculture and micro-enterprise applications. The
course will be useful to the person seeking employment in the solar energy
industry as well as the person seeking to apply solar electricity for
his or her own use. It
will also meet the needs of those working in rural development, including
decision makers, project managers, technicians and entrepeneurs.
Description
PV
202 is a 5-day, on-site PV design course with practical hands-on
exercises and/or installation.
See course location for details on specific project. Participants will
learn how to design PV Systems and specify components. Learning will be
reinforced with hands-on experience with measurement, observation,
and evaluation of all aspects of complete and operational PV systems on-site.
Participants will gain experience with all aspects of PV system design,
specification, and criteria for a safe, Code-compliant installation. They
will also learn aspects of operation including maintenance, troubleshooting
and repair procedures.
Topics
Include: The
Basics of Solar Electricity; PV System Components; PV modules, batteries,
PV Controls, inverters, efficient appliances, and system wiring; PV System
Sizing; Component Specification; System Costs.
Hands-on
Lab topics include: Solar Site Analysis; wiring and mounting PV modules,
measuring & evaluating system performance; battery maintenance; troubleshooting
& repair techniques; safety; use of meters and tools
of the trade.
What You will Learn
Upon Successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
1. Demonstrate
a practical working knowledge of concepts, terminology, and calculations
of electrical power and energy as it applies to the design and evaluation
of PV power systems.
2.
Determine
the power and energy requirements for any desired application(s).
3.
Access
the resource information required for PV system design; including solar
resource data and hardware specifications.
4. Perform
hand calculations to determine
the capacity and specifications for each of the major components required
in a solar electric power system.
5. Evaluate
performance of a PV system & each of it's components
6. Demonstrate
proper PV System maintenance.
7.
Demonstrate troubleshooting & repair procedures for PV systems.
8. Observe
and practice safety procedures in the use of tools and installation of
PV systems.
